Education & Equity in the Midst of a Pandemic

Students & families face an education & equity crisis due to COVID 19’s effects on school and work.
Please join us on October 13th at 4:45 PM for a panel discussion to describe the challenges students,
families, and educators face, the community-wide efforts that are underway to support them,
and how you and your Rotary Club can help. This panel discussion will feature: 

Ben Allen
UVA Equity Center, Executive Director
Ben has served as a teacher in Washington DC and Virginia, Asst Principal in Albemarle County Public Schools, and as an officer in the Army & Army National Guard. His passion is connecting the resources of UVA to the local community to build a collective capacity for educators & families to meet the diverse needs of children.

Juandiego Wade
Charlottesville City School Board
Juandiego has served on the Charlottesville City School Board since 2006 as a tireless advocate for students, families, and teachers. As Albemarle County’s Social Services Career Center Coordinator, he established the Albemarle County Career Center to provide job readiness skills to connect local job seekers with meaningful employment opportunities.

James Pierce
Boys & Girls Clubs of Central VA, CEO
James left his role as a teacher, assistaint principal, and principal to lead the Boys & Girls Club because he wanted to make the time kids spend outside of school more valuable & enriching. Since the COVID 19 outbreak, the Boys & Girls Clubs has responded rapidly to provide in person support or virtual learning and after school activities for hundreds of our region’s most at risk students.

Shawn Mulligan
VMDO Architects, K-12 Studio
Shawn is a fierce advocate for education, equity, and building strong, sustainable communities. With area non profits he has formed multiple networking groups to connect young professionals with ways to serve the community through volunteer and non
profit service. He is c urrently organizing volunteer and material support for students, families, and educators in this challenging season.
