Joanna Ajex (The Women's Initiative)
Mental Health Services for Charlottesville's Refugee Community

Joanna Ajex, Therapist & Education Coordinator
The Women's Initiative

Joanna Ajex will join us to discuss the mental health needs of Charlottesville’s refugee community. As a therapist for The Women’s Initiative, Ajex partners with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to provide individual counseling to refugees. She has also co-facilitated trauma-informed, cross-cultural psychoeducation workshops with refugee leaders.

The Women’s Initiative provides vital mental health services regardless of their ability to pay. Through counseling, social support and education programs, they serve over 4,000 women annually. The agency works to break down barriers to care by having free walk-in clinics five days a week; child care; services in multiple languages; a diverse team of therapists; and partnerships with many other community organizations. Their goal is to create a safe and welcoming place for women of all backgrounds to heal.
