Remco Bernaerdts & Raphaelle Artaud

Remco Bernaerdts is our Ambassadorial scholar from Neerpelt, Belgium.  He is enrolled in a
Masters program at the University of Virginia Law School, and he is sponsored by the Rotary
Club of Overpelt en Noord Limburg.  Remco has worked extensively in Africa, addressing
human rights issues, especially with regard to mentally ill children, former child slaves, juvenile
court systems and political prisoners; as well as institutional issues such as anti-corruption,
democracy and the rule of law.  Remco completed an internship with the Belgian representation
to the United Nations, during which he served on the UN Human Rights Council and Committee
Against Torture.  He has worked on human rights issues in Uganda, Ghana, Sierra Leone,
Democratic Republic of Congo, and Belgium.  Remco's career goals are to advise governments
and NGOs in creating constitutional and legislative reform to improve human rights and prevent
conflicts, and to become a professor of law.

Raphaelle Artaud is our Youth Exchange student from Dieppe, Normandy, France. She attends a
large high school there, and she is enrolled in Charlottesville HS here. Raphaelle is currently
hosted by Christine Lindsay, whose daughter, Madelyn, is on a Youth Exchange in the Czech
Republic. Raphaelle is an accomplished equestrian and flautist, and she enjoys cycling and
sailing. She has joined the Charlottesville HS Cross-Country team, among other activities. She
is looking forward to getting to know many people here, especially Rotarians, and to improving
her language skills.
