Long Term Drinking Water Supply Plan for the Businesses and Residents of Charlottesville/Albemarle

Bill Mawyer, Executive Director
Rivanna Water & Sewer Authority

A long range drinking water plan was crafted in 2012 in response to a major drought which gripped the area in 2002. This plan included construction of a new dam for the Ragged Mountain Reservoir, as well as a new pipeline to connect the South Rivanna Reservoir and the Ragged Mountain Reservoir.

Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority (RWSA) was created in 1972 by the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County to provide wholesale water supply, water treatment, and wastewater interception and treatment for the City and Albemarle County. Our staff is dedicated to providing an adequate water supply for now and in the future while protecting the natural environment. Drinking water is distributed throughout the urban community by ACSA and Charlottesville Public Utilities. We then receive the community’s wastewater, treat it, and safely return it back to the environment in the form of clean water.
